- This Double page spread is a feature on the band Kasabian and over a full page of the two is covered in a mediated image of the band which follows the rule of thirds. The pose they have taken is not a live gig picture but a mediated photo shoot in San Francisco port, their facial expressions are not smiling but look cool and as if they are thinking which is appealing to the reader as an ideal self/partner image.
- The use of pull quotes finds a general jist of the whole page by choosing the most important quotes from the interviewee which draws in the reader to find out more about the thing suggested.
- And the actual columns are organised into 3 with the overall text block wrapping tightly around the pull quote and inset picture which looks neat and professional and easy to read. The writing also wraps around the first letter of the article following the contours of the “S” .
- The annotated inset photo of Serge and Tom “ hard at work “ gives the reader an insight into the bands life and dealings which is appealing to the reader as they feel involved and privileged. Also the fact that Sergio is referred to as serge shows the mode of address to the reader which is peer to peer.
- The small title at the top of the page reads IN THE STUDIO which once again makes the reader feel involved with the fact they can find out what it is like inside the studios which is a good selling point for the magazine in essence giving VIP access to all areas with the bands.
- The “S” appears to drip down alongside the article which is an aesthetic feature to the article.

- The overall layout of this contents page is aimed at looking cool and appealing to the younger generation, rather being user friendly and simple, the magazine logo features in the top of the page in its usual red and white bold colour, with the contrast between a white font on a black background. The Font in the title is all in capitals which once again makes the magazine seem loud and appealing.
- The page is divided into sub headings around a large graphic, which once again makes it attractive to the reader rather than practical, the large graphic reads ALBUMS OF 2009 which draws in the reader as this is a January issue just after new year and potential readers will be drawn in by the essential info they will need for music in 2009.
- There is however a very practical band index down the left hand side of the page which is obviously not one of the main objects on the page as the font is small and simple with a simple heading in black, this is useful to the more mature reader as it is easy to find a specific band compared to youths just flicking through aimlessly.
- A clever way of engaging the reader is used here by claiming that everything the reader needs to hear is contained on page 17, the lead reads EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS YEAR.
- The editor also uses a rhyming couplet to make the sentence stand out and be remembered by the reader, probably resulting in the magazine being bought. Also using “exclusive” making the magazine seem unique which is a good selling point.
Once again the most famous bands are used to advertise the magazine on the contents page, using Klaxons and The View for example entices the reader to buy the magazine and read more.
- Also featured in the contents page is a rather large advertisement by NME trying to get readers to subscribe and boost their profits. Placing the advert here and making it stand out was a good decision as the contents page is where most readers will go as a point of reference and so it has the best chance of being noticed rather than being on a bands double page spread that some readers may avoid if they don’t like their music.

Many meanings are encoded within a magazine cover to attract and engage with the specific target audience. Editors do this by using semiotics hidden within a magazines cover. Some of these I will go though on this cover of NME (New Musical Magazine). Often magazines will use anchorage to give an overall bigger meaning to the reader making the pictures and text work together. As suggested by Roland Barthes in 1977. This magazine is aimed at the younger reader as younger artists are shown and the overall style is very loud which youths stereotypically like.
- The Mast Head is what draws the potential reader in showing the Magazines name which is usually a generic style so that it can be easily found every time in a magazine rack. The colours of this are bright reds white and black which work together to give a 3d look to make it stand out and the font is in capitals once again appealing to the target readers.
- Along with the masthead are a series of famous artists and bands which is designed to appeal to new buyers. Artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen who regularly feature in the music news are plastered all along the top of the magazine. The bit that’s shown when covered by other magazines in a rack.
- Band members of KASABIAN are featured on the front of this magazine as the main body of the over. It features two male men which can be seen as ideal partners or even ideal selves to the possible reader. Their facial expressions are looking serious which has been mediated by the editor and the photographer to have the desired effect of making them to be seen as the above.
