Magazine Research
The Magazine industry
Bauer
Music Magazines are published by conglomerates (One main company that owns shares in many smaller useful companies) such as Bauer Publishing and IPC media, both these companies publish magazines to cater for many mainstream audiences for example NME and niche audiences for example gardening issues and other smaller hobbies such as photography and cooking, each having dozens of brands that they deal with and own. Bauer Publishing was first recognised in the UK in 1987 with bella magazine and since then has added many successful magazines to its repertoire of magazines. .
Bauer Owns magazines such as, Closer, Heat, GRAZIA, Zoo, and many more successful magazines, although mainly aimed at Women’s magazines with a few niche subjects such as Bikes and gardening, overall the main sub genres of Bauer magazines are as follows; Women’s, Men’s Entertainment, Men’s Lifestyle, Equine, Gardening, Transport, Football, Golf, Pets, Angling, Motorcycling, Motoring, Outdoors, Photography and lifestyle. All these sub genres appeal to variety of different people and this is how Bauer has something for everyone. Bauer does not just make mainstream magazines, as some companies do, it has a range of mainstream and niche magazines aimed It different demographics, for example a major reader for some of Bauer’s women’s magazines would be the typical bored teenager towards the late twenties range with some aiming at higher ages such as those on pregnancy topics, and an example of another demographic Bauer would aim it is teenagers to late twenties for a magazine such as NME.
Kerrang Magazine
With each issue selling on average 52 thousand single copies it is another popular magazine although aimed at a niche Rock Music audience compared to a music magazine such as NME which contains news on all the latest bands. Kerrang aims its magazines at the niche Rock audience which purely love all things Rock, typically having long hair to get the rock image, the colours are very black and nothing fancy which appeals to a rock audience.
Bauer uses a lot of synergy and cross media ownership with their brands, a good example is Kerrang, initially a rock music magazine which was little known, has now grown into a digital radio channel, has its own TV channel and a website, plus the very publicised kerrang tour which makes kerrang a very well known and desirable magazine to today’s rock population.
IPC Media
“IPC Media is a leading UK consumer magazine publisher. Almost two in every three UK women and over 44% of UK men read an IPC magazine. That's over 26 million UK adults”
IPC is a similar group to Bauer and has similar techniques and traits although from the list of brands seems to aim more at the niche audiences selling around 150 million copies a year in its portfolio it is very successful, brands include; NME – one of the best selling music magazines at the minute, LOOK magazine which is a famous women’s magazine and also NUTS which is a typical lads mag, in all IPC media has around the same number of brands as BAUER and sells at a similar price for example a copy of Bauer’s Kerrang costs £2.20 and IPC’s NME costs the same at £2.20.
NME
Is one of the more popular of music magazines at the moment, National Music Express started off as a newspaper, hence the name National Music Express and has since been shortened to NME to fit in with today’s younger readers, the target audience of NME is teenagers towards the late twenties again and the overall cool style and content of NME reflects this well, the use of colours such as red and using this colour in a bold masthead makes it less boring compared to its newspaper roots. From December to June 05 NME sold close to 80 000 copies and once again this does not reflect the readership.
